You're a mass murderer who sees shades as monsters and refuses to give them a chance despite their repeated showings of humanity. Yoko Taro has this philosophy in games where 'how can someone who kills 1000s of people in a game be considered a hero?'. That being said, the Kaine translations are supposed to be basically a look into the concept of morality. Is Nier right in his quest? Is he justified in his actions? Was anyone right? This entire situation comes from complete misunderstanding. Hell, the first shades you fight against in the game, the children(small shades are children), they don't even fight back. They run away when they get hit. You kill them in cold blood with no provocation.tl;dr It's important to the themes of the game.
