You guys are talking about senators here. You're talking about something totally different. People just see senators as a tool to pass their agenda in congress, and it's fine for someone like that to be a person of color. But a president? No. They see the presidency as a sort of god-king of America. It's completely different.

Of course, not every conservative thinks like this - for a decent portion of them these kind of racial grievances don't really matter anymore. But it matters to enough of them for there to be too much resistance for it to work. Again, for a senator? Doesn't matter. They can be one of the 'slave classes', as they see it. But for a president? For too many of them that has to be someone white who can rule over the country rightfully.
