It's not complicated as long as you're okay with looking things up. The game has never had a proper tutorial and it doesn't really introduce new mechanics very well.

One thing that continually confuses people is taking photos of pokemon. There are two tasks that it likes to use that mean entirely different things. "Take photos of pokemon" and "Take photos of pokemon in the wild." In the wild means it has to be on the screen when you're trying to catch it. Not specifying wild means it has to be one in your storage that you have already caught. And there's a ton of stuff in there like that, where the game wants you to do something but is very bad at explaining what to do.
