It's what got me into social work, technically.

I was in a medical detox facility, supposed to be a ten day stay while you look for other rehab.

The "look for other rehab" thing was very much not the facility's plan, this place exists only to fill beds.

Anyway, you had to go in for a session with the doctor every day, since it's a medical detox.

While I was there, I made friends with this guy Henry. Mid-fifties, had a great job, alcohol brought him down, now he's unhoused. Not an uncommon story in a place like that.

Said doctor told him on my third day that he is a "worthless old man," direct quote.

I reacted badly, tried to get him to complain, he wouldn't since he knew it was pointless, I tried to complain and they said it didn't matter.

So I checked myself out on the spot and got into social work education because that shit wasn't going to fly.
