The dumbest thing is that it would have been relatively simple to do with just a bit of futureproofing. I know one of the Stadium games was a little overdone in terms of length of animations, but those otherwise should have been the basis of GF's animations. Instead, you have models that should punch or kick that do neither, models that should use proper breath/beam attacks that do neither, lazy hopping animations and cheap effects.
I specifically remember when they justified removing a bunch of Pokemon in one of the games with the justification that they were making completely new HD models that they'd be able to reuse in the future to save themselves time, and that's why the animations were so lifeless.

The sad thing is that I can't remember whether they said that in gen 6 or gen 7...
