He peaked in the consciousness of most Americans in the 80's when he was in prison so in the minds of someone that doesn't really follow the world news or politics that's where he remained. The same people that believe that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 80's also can't tell you when the Berlin wall fell, or what the Berlin wall was, or what the cold war was about.
