It seems like the linearity complaint for XIII is more of a meme people latch onto because most of the actual problems with it are too abstract and nuanced to properly articulate. I like FFXIII, but a large issue with the linearity of it is how blatant it is. You can run forwards, avoid most fights, watch the cutscenes, and fight a boss - then do it over an over again.
