In terms of writing, characters, world building, emotional moments, etc., its in a league of its own as far as shnen goes, and I would argue Oda deserves to be in the conversation about greatest fantasy authors alongside Tolkien, Jordan, Kay, Sanderson, etc.

But its also absurdist fantasy like Discworld is, and a lot of people just cant get past the purposefully absurd character designs and behavior etc.

For what its worth, One Piece is the second highest selling comic of all time with 535.5 million units sold. Superman is number 1 with 600 million units sold, but Superman started in 1937 and One Piece started in 1997. Since I became aware of the sales figures, I think One Piece has dwarfed Superman + spin-offs / elseworlds / etc. combined in terms of annual sales figures, so if that trend continues, its possible it might pass Superman before the story ends.
