No, they're not fine as a practice. They parasitically suck your time away at absolutely no benefit to you. They create incentives that lead to sanitized content and sensationalism.

But they could benefit you if you actually needed the product. Like I said, the issue is that they are intrusive. Example, do you complain when you see a billboard on the highway? Chances are you don't because the billboard isn't blocking you on the road. When you are at a red light, you aren't assaulted by ads.

They are fine existing. The lack of regulation on websites is what the problem is.
