I will say the PSO (less so PSO2) approach also makes some sense: You walk slowly for a second or two, then start sprinting automatically and with no limit for how long you can do it. It's a short enough wait that it doesn't really affect travel times, but it's long enough that you have to be careful of your positioning and start moving to avoid attacks earlier than you would if you could just sprint right away.
