this would be ideal if anyone would ever actually do that, yeah.

What I'd really like to see is for copyright law to ditch this nonsense about trademarks expiring after a certain amount of time no matter how actively the IP is being used and instead just say "anything that hasn't been available for official sale for more than 5 years (or whatever) becomes public domain." In the year of our lord 2023, there's absolutely no reason every piece of copyrighted art in existence can't be made available for sale. Digital storage costs are negligible (and in many cases already being paid because the owners are keeping a copy), the costs to digitally distribute a copy are more than covered by just about any price they can put on it, and the costs to maintain a digital distribution server are already being paid to distribute contemporary content. As such, if an IP holder isn't selling it, that can be taken as a tacit admission that they don't care about making money from it and it can go to public domain without harming them.

Remakes would fall into a weird territory there, though, where something like RE4make or FFVII Remake are obviously not the same games as the original RE4 or FFVII, but they carry the same name and a lot of the same elements that would make up the IP. But hey, I'm no lawyer. I just think it's stupid that it's illegal to pirate games that nobody has sold in 20 years and that nobody has shown any interest in porting.
