I looked this guy up and it looks like his later career has been a string of mid anime and manga adaptations. He's had success with the Doraemon CG movies, but he's adapted stuff like Lupin III and Parasyte to mixed results.

It seems to an untrained eye that he had a decent career making original movies in the 2000's, then hit a point where he was making schlocky live action adaptations from 2010 onwards after his regular fare began to do worse. He's made some original live-action movies since, but they don't seem to have set the world on fire.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong and the movie will be fine, but this reeks of Pacific Rim: Uprising to me. You take a strong solo movie with a defined vision and give it to a b-team of hacks to turn into a franchise, and the end result is a hatchet job that shits all over the legacy of the original.
