Guys like Capone used the Thompson as much as a status symbol as anything else. Capone was more interested in saying "I'm so fucking rich I can afford a bunch of these for my guys" than just having the full auto. All things given, he probably could have found some cheaper full auto guns if he looked just from bribing a guy at the local armories, though my attempt at fact checking that statement just gave me links about modern gun laws. The best I can find is a mass production M1919 Browning machine gun was about 60$ cheaper.
