Look at George Floyd for a minute. This was bad. It's already an outlier because Floyd died. But then the police department defended this, protecting not just Chauvin but the other police on the scene. They released a statement "man dies in medical episode in police custody" and then lied about the whole thing.
But George Floyd died, and this is where people miss the forest for the trees. Think about all the George Floyds we didn't hear about because they didn't die. Exact same situation, they just survived. We know knee-on-neck and other dangerous techniques were taught nationwide even if they weren't standard or employed by everyone.
This does not even begin to scratch the surface of brutality, and other shitty behaviors like civil asset forfeiture or how cops can basically destroy your property because of a search warrant and you have to pay to fix it even after they don't find anything or even if they went to the wrong house.
The system of policing in America empowers bullies to be bullies and you cannot fight back or seek legal restitution. Forget about homicide for a moment. There is a very wide breadth of injustice perpetrated by police to which there is no answer and no accountability. The fact that only 1000 people or something are killed doesn't mean shit.
