And more than likely only relatively wealthy people could afford to obtain instruments and train themselves to be conposers and to travel and make a living that way

Folk music was still a thing, and I imagine there were plenty of "indie" musicians within those scenes, but they generally couldn't make a living doing that, their instruments would have been limited to relatively cheap ones (so no pianos or organs), and none of them would have been literate enough to write anything down.
