IRL true women's underwear didn't become a thing until the 20th century. Before then, there was a huge slit in their shift so that they could stick a bed pot down there to urinate. Modern period costumes in media omit these slits for the actor's modesty, so modern audiences don't understand why looking up a woman's dress was scandalous. It was because minge was on the program.

If something like Bridgerton had been more accurate, a lifted skirt would quickly become X-rated.
