You're making an argument that isn't there. No one is saying that gas station sunglasses are the same as more expensive brands.

The point is that many don't feel it's worth the massive jump in price for some of the high end brands.

Like I have no problem paying $130 for a pair of Ray Ban Aviators, because they last me much longer than some cheap plastic $40 sunglasses. But I don't see the point in paying $260+ for a pair of Aviators from Randolph Engineering. There's nothing I see that justifies the price being double that of my Ray Bans.

Same thing with watches. I'd much rather get a Timex or a Fossil over a Rolex.

For sunglasses lasting long isnt the only criteria. Lens tint clarity is a big factor, of which you probably just werent aware of

If you tried ray bans and Randolph back to back youd realize that Randolphs do a better job of blocking out the sun while being easier to see thru the lenses due to better clarity
