TC, do you have a spiritual basis for your beliefs re: homosexuality and Christianity? Because it's fine if you don't, but I think that part of your conflict here is that (at least as presented) you're starting from the position of

1. I believe in the core tenets of Christianity
2. I'm LGBT

and then concluding that there's no way Christianity could be against homosexual behavior (in a "no true scotsman" way) so any homophobia in the church must be a misinterpretation by evil people.

I think there are arguments to be made, I'm just not sure whether you believe them or if you're finding things that make it convenient for you. If that makes sense.
