I don't like how harshly people treat critics when it comes to things like this, by and large they know what they are doing. They didn't come into the Mario movie looking for Tokyo Story, they were looking for a good entertaining family adventure movie and half of them didn't find one. Mario games are light breezy adventures and critics still adore them because they're well crafted and fun! Personally the weirdest thing I've learned from the reviews is that they ~~drop a lot of random '80s songs into this. Why does a Mario movie need Take on Me or Holding Out for a Hero?
