It's much more action-based than RE2 and RE3, but I'd say not quite as much as the original. It's pretty free with the handgun ammo, but I've been running consistently low on shotgun and rifle ammo. It's even worse on Hardcore and Professional from what I hear. I only did just get to the castle though and RE games always throw more and more ammo at you the further you get.

And yeah, the ganados are much more aggressive. Getting into a crowd of them is bad news bears. And aside from the parasite headbursters from the original, there's also a new mechanic where downed enemies can sometimes begin seizing. If you don't put them down with a knife, they come back up as a "broken neck" ganado which is much more difficult to kill.
