While the process of reconstruction and the subsequent political hurdles blacks faced is a difficult stain on American history, it sets up a weird precedent of trying to redeem every injustice the country went through, and to try and remedy it through financial transaction. I personally don't think that money solves everything. You need something kind of shared, founding ethos or narrative that everyone will agree on, for real reconciliation to work.
