Topic | So, Should We Stop Saying JRPG? (The Jimquisition) |
Proto_Spark 03/14/23 3:44:42 PM #23: | I don't think there's necessarily a problem with just retiring the term, though it would need to be replaced with something else. And the video's suggestion of "turn-based" RPG isn't bad, though then there are some iffy ones in there. Though "Character-Driven" or "Narrative" RPGs are just bad. There are multiple types of RPG for a reason, and the people who like Final Fantasy 7 won't necessarily like Dark Souls, just because they're both RPGs. I get wanting to change the name because the J can be misleading, but it still serves a useful purpose to explain a certain type of RPG and needs to stick around in some sense. And this might be recency bias, but "JRPG" doesn't mean "RPG from Japan" its a very specific style of RPG. and is subject to whatever random trends the larger gaming community goes through. Of ****ing course Undertale is a JRPG. And like every other genre, it'll be subjected to whatever whims of the community think is cool at that moment. Open-World collect-a-thon Action games are ****ing everywhere right now, and most of them suck. But that's the cool thing right now so they'll be made until they aren't popular anymore. ...
