the godfather would go on to finish as the highest grosser of 1972. 2001 was the highest grossing movie of 1968. i could keep going except im starting to feel bad but yeah lying isn't nice so stop doing it lol

The late 60's thru early to mid-70's were the exception, not the rule when it came to American auteur-driven cinema having such mainstream appeal (which helps explain why filmmakers like Tarantino have such a long-running obsession with that era). And it only lasted a few years before Jaws and Star Wars invented the blockbuster as we know it today.
