The real problem is that it's kind of a subjective thing. I know puberty for me was never as bad any any sitcom or movie has ever portrayed it, so from my perspective it feels like most other people are overplaying it. So any given story is going to treat it differently. There's no one right way to portray it, because no matter what you do there will always be people who say "That's not what it was like for me."
