Hamon was too limited in what it can do and what powers it can give people in battle. It's not really all that different from something like ki energy in DBZ. Stands allow for way more creativity, and IMO that creativity is what sets JoJo apart from other similar battle anime. I don't think JoJo would have lasted nearly as long as it has if Araki stuck with Hamon as the primary power system.
