He's done a lot of noteworthy things in his career.
He really hasn't. He bought his way onto his first company board with a $28,000 loan from blood-emerald daddy (which he still refuses to admit to). He was ousted from Zip2 and X.com before they could get big, and only afterward got hundreds of millions in payouts when the companies were sold, later on. Tesla already had its product by the time elon bought it with x.com/PayPal buyout money; all he did was write his name in the patents and call it a day.

His whole career is a story of failing upward, golden parachuting from one company to the next. Most of his pre-tesla companies were held aloft by angel investors he got through his dad's connections, and only turned profitable after he was forced out; tesla was the one exception, and as I said, they were primed and ready to succeed with or qithout him. His business ventures have done well IN SPITE of him, not because of him.

He sells himself as this great champion of the "American Dream Realized," but he's just another trust fund kid who, to quote Obama, "didn't build that."
