I'd make the argument that pensions are just as exploitative (maybe more so) since it traps the worker for 10+ years in a single organization, usually 20-30 years to get maximum benefits. During which managers can allow their salary/wage to fall below fair market value and/or subject them to mismanagement/abusive management and either they remain in the job (and thus maximally exploited) or they leave the job and the organization is fully/partially off the hook for their retirement benefit. yet we are in 2022 and could just make it to where you own your pension and take it with you so much can be done when we realize why things are the way they are and don't go "well it just is the way it is! shrug!" ...
