James Cameron is a household name, they all know who he is and most of his famous films like terminator, aliens, and titanic. They all also know what Avatar is as well, so yes I can say that there is definitely a big international crowd for this series. It's very early to tell, but Avatar 1 is theaters highest grossing film specifically because the movie was meant to watch in 3D, which meant more people over time wanting to see the film in that way. It might not make a whole lot of money in the short term, but you can bet they are banking it in the long term for profits. With Disney basically owning the IP, you can bet they are going to corporatize the shit out of it like Star Wars and Marvel, then you'll finally get your "cultural impact" in the most mainstream way possible.
