I'm not sure where you're coming from regarding a "press", though.
Aren't you supposed to press the coffee into a puck before putting it in the espresso machine? That's how I've always seen it done

Unsure if this is really true or not, but James Hoffman (coffee guru) reckosn that for decent expresso you need a machine that starts around the $300 mark. Everything under that lacks the pressure/heat required to make it properly.
I do trust what Hoffman has to say about coffee. He always seems to put a lot of thought and research into the things he says
