I generally do think they tried. They just gad to dedicate much of the runtime to damage control in regards to Luke's character assassination, introducing a new big bad, redeeming Ben, attempting to fix Reys backstory, nastalgia pandering and concludeding everyone's character arcs.

It's a daunting task I don't think anyone could have accomplished.

But...they didn't introduce a new big bad, they just recycled the old one. And the necessity to fix Luke's 'character assassination' and Rey's backstory is highly debatable; they could have continued in this new direction that TLJ set up (which would have required risk and effort, but would at worst made for at least a more memorable movie), but instead pulled a 180 with all the level-headedness of a jittery squirrel that decides to run most of the way back across the road when it sees a car coming. To me that's not the definition of 'trying,' that's the cinematic equivalent of hitting the snooze button until 2pm.

Extremely hard disagree on the first and last point, and the John Williams score is literally the only good thing about Phantom Menace. The Phantom Menace is the equivalent of shitty anime filler.

TPM is one of the few instances where I'll freely admit that childhood nostalgia is the one and only thing propping it up, and in this case just barely; some of that stuff looked really cool in 1999, and I have fond memories of it looking really cool in 1999.
