I generally do think they tried. They just gad to dedicate much of the runtime to damage control in regards to Luke's character assassination, introducing a new big bad, redeeming Ben, attempting to fix Reys backstory, nastalgia pandering and concludeding everyone's character arcs.

It's a daunting task I don't think anyone could have accomplished.

It's a coin flip between this and Phantom Menace as being the worst Star Wars.

PM had the best saber duels in the fanchise, and duel of the fates track. on top of which like with all 3 movies it at least had a good story on paper. Making them fun movies to review and watch analysis on.
