WAS the recount effort obviously doomed to failure, though? Trump's life experience has appeared to teach him that anything is possible if you are amoral and pay lawyers enough...and I'm not sure that lesson is incorrect.

The scale of what he wanted to accomplish was pretty much impossible. He might have swayed one or two electorates if he got the right corrupt people on the first tries (bearing in mind that as he asks the wrong person anywhere to find a few thousand votes for him, the entire country is going to be on high alert because he's admitted to conspiring to rig the election), but he lost by a pretty substantial margin.

He likely didn't believe it was impossible, but that's my point: He's deluded enough to think that he can't lose. To that end, I expect he'd be similarly deluded enough to think he could win as an independent. The somewhat alarming thing is that he probably stands a better chance of winning as an independent than any other would-be independent candidate would, but that's still not a good chance of winning.
