I'm starting to wonder if parents are just becoming worse.
I hear it's crazy out there or they take their kids to something easy.
The spirit shouldn't be purely put on the kids. The parents should do more.

To play Devil's Advocate, when I was a young kid I was really shy - so going up to the doors of random strangers to beg for candy was like living hell. In spite of the fact that I always enjoyed dressing up, I never really wanted to go trick or treating. My parents would occasionally kind of nudge me into going, but it was usually tense at best and miserable at worst. I vaguely remember one year where I basically bordered on having a panic attack over it.

So with kids today being even more shut-in and prone to social anxiety I could see things being even worse for them. So maybe parents shouldn't be forcing their kids to go out and knock on random doors anyway.

Doing stuff like "trunk or treat" at school is one way to compensate for that sort of problem, and kids who live in housing developments where they know a lot of their neighbors (or can trick or treat in larger groups of friends) probably have things easier, but I do feel like the kids need to be the ones who decide for themselves whether or not they care about going out.
