65. Channel Zero: The Dream Door (TV Series) (Shudder)

I made it to the end of Channel Zero, this time with my boy Pretzel Jack!

The Dream Door is about a couple that moves into a new home. However, they soon find a door in the basement that wasn't previously there, with something shocking inside.

So alright, this season also does a good thing where they delve into deeper concepts like attachment and emotional issues, and I think it does a really good job of that. Literally keeping things locked in a door in your mind is all kinds of clever and great.

And then you have Pretzel Jack! He's an incredible monster! He has so many memorable moments and I think he's absolutely fucking terrifying because they got a real contortionist, Troy James, to be this villain. And my god do they do so many clever and great things with the idea. My lord, I loved Pretzel Jack.

However, this has the same issue a lot of these Channel Zero seasons have (aside from Butcher's Block) where it ends up losing the plot in the last couple episodes. When the story focuses entirely on this terrifying SOB Pretzel Jack, it's outstanding. When it starts to go away from that a little bit... well, it's just not as interesting. It does SOMETHING interesting and I like a lot of ideas there, but it's NOT as interesting or tense as Pretzel Jack. In fact, there's a stretch of this story where there's no fear, no tension, just... blah. Drama. Who cares?

There's a ton to like about this season, but it just kind of misses the landing a bit, and they really should have kept the legend Pretzel Jack around more. The ending of the first episode is worth watching alone for just how outstanding it is. There's a lot of great directing in here too, because it's worth mentioning. Like the director of Butcher's Block, it's a shame E.L. Katz here hasn't really done some amazing things.

So yeah, I enjoy this season a lot, but I think the first half of it is definitely a hell of a lot better than the second half of it. Just watch it for Pretzel Jack though.

Rating: 7.5/10
