46. Hocus Pocus (Disney+)

Kids get horror too. And I figure I'd revisit my childhood with something that probably got me interested in Halloween and horror movies more than a lot of things.

Hocus Pocus is about three witches that get brought back to life and must track down a group of children and take their souls before sunrise!

You know, I think this movie really holds up still. It's hard to judge this since it would be judged on a scale with children's movies, but I think it makes for an entertaining ride at the very least. Plenty of scares to spook younger kids too.

But moreover, it works as a comedy extremely well. I don't think it's just nostalgia talking, but I think the comedy here is still pretty quality. I see why I adored it as a kid. All three witches, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy really threw their all into these performances and it shows. Every scene has something little with them that I caught, even in the background while others are talking. It really shows they just wanted to entertain, and they were perfect for these roles.

The story does go around in circles, it feels like, a little bit, but it does mostly seem satisfying and fun to follow. The kids involved are also good too and not written in an annoying way. They had some acting chops too in them. They help round out the film to make everything work with these Halloween and horror elements toned down to a children's story.

So yeah, I didn't know if this would hold up still, but it did. I think this is a quality film to show the children! Probably the best children's horror/Halloween movie in the end.

Rating: 8/10
