44. Orphan: First Blood (Paramount+)

ORPHAN TWIST SPOILERS INCOMING

I have no idea how this movie was so damn good wtf. What an entertaining prequel.

Orphan: First Blood is a prequel to Orphan, in which they tell the story where the Esther finds her way to America by pretending to be a missing daughter from a family.

You kind of need to talk about the Orphan twist to talk about this movie--they outright inform you of it at the start of this movie. So if you don't want to be spoiled on The Orphan, you should watch that before this one.

In any case, this movie rules! It sets the pace of violence right at the beginning of the film, and Esther is as cold as ever in this one, and this one has a twist that is also pretty phenomenal in its own right that changes the trajectory of this film entirely in such a positive way.

I was also surprised by how well they did the effects here. You can actually believe that Esther is a little person still in this film, using manipulation of camera shots among other things. They did a great job with this and it honestly is probably the biggest hurdle they jumped.

How they made a prequel so entertaining and actually better than the original is shocking. The idea they had here was perfect, and while it's a bit weird that they make you try to feel sympathy for Esther, I think it mostly works and swings you back around by the end of the film.

It's a hard movie to talk about without spoilers, but I think it's absolutely worth checking out if you ever watched The Orphan. Watch Orphan: First Kill! You won't be disappointed!
