Alligators and crocodiles share a common ancestor, but the split happened close to 100 million years ago. This is several million years before placental mammals evolved. So humans are more closely related to all non-egg laying mammals than alligators are to crocodiles.

I was wondering why alligators aren't considered a type of crocodile, so I looked it up and learned this today.
