Did you grow up in the Midwest and how do you feel about this painting?

I've taken an expansive art history class in college but we didn't talk about this one in particular. Of course, I've seen it parodied a ton, but it always struck me as just a quaint portrait.

Apparently there was a long-running debate across the fine art world when this painting was unveiled about what statement it might be making. Many noteworthy art critics praised the painter Grant Wood for ostensibly portraying an "insightful critique of rural traditionalism and God-fearing conservatism."

Grant Wood himself said "There is satire in it, but only as there is satire in any realistic statement."

There is also debate about whether the couple is husband and wife or father and daughter, and which you believe can considerably recontextualize the work.
