I think it's mostly because the show is meant to (mostly) be a comedy, despite going into VERY dark places at times, and very few of those comedic moments involve Diane. She tends to be the wet blanket of the show.

I can't think of a single character on that show who would surprise me to find that people hated them. The entire cast consists of deeply flawed people scraping by in their daily lives while for the most part not addressing serious personal problems they have and ultimately dragging the people around them into their messes. Some people are worse than others, but every single one of them has some kind of issue where I could see a viewer being turned off by their very character.

This is also very true, but most of them do it to comedic effect.
