Oak said the other trainers called it quits at some point when Ash first returned to Pallet in Gen 1. They never appeared, and we didn't even know which starter Gary had chosen until the Johto League... which only Brock had been privy to, given the gym battle. The only thing about Ash's dad was in the most recent movie, where Ash had some memory of his father.
