WoW actually had this a bit. Until Cataclysm, weapon skills were a thing. If you got a two-handed axe that was better than your current weapon, but you never used two-handed axes, it would constantly miss until you axed people enough times.

You also couldn't even equip certain weapons until you trained them. Each class would have weapons they could equip, but they only started out knowing a few. You had to find a weapons trainer and have them teach you to use a weapon. Not all weapons trainers knew all weapon skills either, so you'd have to travel to multiple capital cities to learn them all.
