It turns out that the phosphorus fertilizer that tobacco needs to live was heavily contaminated with uranium and thorium, which eventually decays to polonium. Polonium 210 is an absurd alpha emitter, with a half-life of about 138 days, and loves to stick to the bottom of tobacco leaves.
