My son in law came to visit me from England. I was balls deep in Elden Ring. He suggested I play Monster Hunter World. I tried it an hated it. It is not my style of game. It moves too slow, there is too much pointless dialogue, and I just didnt have any fun. Now he did say I had to get further to enjoy it, but I got too bored in the beginning parts. Just not my style of game. I see its merits, but it is just not for me.
Yeah, the beginning sections always seem to drag really badly. The early game quests and monsters aren't interesting, and for a game with minimalistic story telling, it can be a bit heavy handed on setting up the reason your character is killing stuff(mostly World specific, as it's the most story heavy one, but a few other games do do too).

The gameplay is fun, there are loafs of different weapons(I think like 15 different weapon types, or close to it). Each weapon changed the playstyle of the character and offers new moves and abilities. It's a very action oriented game that puts you against big monsters(duh).

It's also a very grindy game. There's 2 ways to get better at the game, one is by simply whining your skill against the monsters. The other is to build better weapons and armor, both of which require you to fight a specific monster over, and over, and over again. Then you reach a higher rank and do it all over again. Then another rank and do it again. Then special quests against a different version of the same monster again.

That sounds bad, and get a little frustrating at times, but the game does a good job at balancing it out so it only feels like a chore if you choose to farm the monster. Gameplay is fun, and varied, monsters are interesting and fun to fight, multiplayer is fun too.

But if grinding for better gear against the same monster doesn't sound fun, it probably won't be. This series is very hit or miss with players. Either it's a hit and you love it, or it's a miss and you hate it.

There was a recent demo for the Sunbreak expansion. I don't know if it got removed since the expansion released a couple days ago though. If it's still up you can give it a try. Just be warned the demo fights tend to be more difficult than they are in the actual game.
