Before this round of decisions, adherence to precedent was enough to stay the hand of the Democrats while the GOP filled enough spots that align with their interests to get favorable decisions on new cases for the foreseeable future. It is difficult to imagine a scenario where major legislation passed by any Democratic administration is not gutted by GOP-aligned judges. The argument of "well the court-packing may swing the other way" seems a lot less important when that is already the reality the Democrats face with the current makeup of the court for an indeterminate amount of time until they get lucky enough for two of the SCOTUS judges to die suddenly during a blue administration (unlike RBG, I'm going to guess they will step down during a conservative administration in order to maintain the favorable balance of power).
