There's really no getting around the fact that we domesticated them and made them dependent on us

There are theories that imply they may be the only species we ever domesticated completely by accident. ie, wolves figured out that they could follow humans around and eat scraps from our camps, and slowly became more and more tolerant to humans, until they started seeing humans as part of their pack (and eventually, as the dominant members of their pack).

If that's the case, then they essentially domesticated themselves and made themselves dependent on us. They weren't forced into service against their will as much as they chose their own fate.

And to be honest, considering their usual fate involves sitting around, sleeping, playing, and eating all day while doing very little to earn their keep other than being adorable, it feels like they made the right choice.
