Do I have to watch anything else prior to this? Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the first entry in the franchise, and it functions as a full standalone 12-episode story. So yes, start there. There's also the Madoka Magica Rebellion sequel movie (plus an upcoming second sequel movie) that takes the story even further and in a different direction, as well as the Magia Record spin-off that tells an alternate story focused on a new cast but in the same universe.
