It isn't necessarily "bad design" it just resulted in a weird play experience for me. I have ADHD, this kind of design simultaneously attracts and repels me. I am hyperaware of this stuff while having very little self control over it or how it affects me. I have to be: while the open world is great here, other games will use the same techniques in more predatory ways.
