In confirming Sages exit from the show, FOX also revealed that should she ever want to return to the series, or if the opportunity ever presents itself in the narrative, that door is still open. Yet the abruptness of her and her characters departure from the show have left many fans wondering if something else had happened (or was happening) behind the scenes. No one involved in the production has said anything to contradict FOXs statement so far, and Sage has not addressed the matter at all on social media.

There had been rumors of Sage's departure even before the season began airing, started by savvy fans noting an uptick of other projects on Ms. Sage's plate. Though FOX made no statement on her sudden departure, Halston Sage herself said in 2019 at a Television Critics Associationthat "It was what was best for the show at the time."

Halston is currently a main series cast member of the successful police procedural Prodigal Son, and 2019's Dark Phoenix gives her a chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the studio decides to follow up on her cameo as the mutant Dazzler in a future film. While Sage's departure from The Orvilleis a loss for fans, her departure appears to have been amicable, and the warm resolution of "Home" means that there will always be a chance for a happy, revitalized Alara to visit her friends on the USS Orville.
