I'd say Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck pulled it off well. Beyond that I'd have to go back to period stuff like Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp. It's a look very few people can pull off.

If anything, it's like fedoras. They used to be the height of cool, but that was because cool guys were the ones wearing them. Then dorky nerds and neckbeards started wearing them to try and BE cool, and all it really did is make the hat itself uncool.

I'd be tempted to say tattoos fall into the same category. Tattoos were cool and badass when it was just badasses who had them. Now that they've become nerd chic, there's very little cool left about most of them.
