That's actually a really great point. I feel like getting your ass kicked is way more helpful to someone who's already really good at the game, compared to someone who's in the mid range since recognizing your mistakes and adjusting your play style is more of a high level skill/adaptation. If there's a huge difference in ability and you're getting completely outplayed, you're not going to learn much.

If anything, I would argue that idea of getting better by losing does hold up, but mostly when playing dittos, since you can directly learn and apply things your opponent is doing for the character you're actively playing.
Like, if you're playing Marth and getting 3-stocked by someone playing a real good Dedede, you're not going to learn much practical knowledge for the cast at large. But Marth dittos would actually be really beneficial even if you're losing because you'll at least gain some understanding of what you could do with him.
